A shadowy fleet of oil tankers, essential to the Kremlin’s sanction-busting efforts, is leaving a trail of environmental disaster across Europe’s vital waterways, threatening a massive taxpayer bill for cleanup.

Europe’s coastal waters are increasingly at risk as Russia’s clandestine oil tanker fleet, operating outside international safety and regulatory norms, begins to leak. These “ghost ships,” crucial to Russia’s efforts to evade Western sanctions, have been linked to at least five significant oil slicks in European Union waters this year alone.
Alarmingly, some of these vessels were already under stringent UK sanctions, underscoring the brazen nature of their operations.
The danger is magnified by the fleet’s deceptive practices. Many of these tankers are intentionally difficult to track, sailing under “fake flags” and often without mandatory insurance. This deliberate lack of accountability makes them “almost impossible to track” and leaves European nations vulnerable to catastrophic environmental damage.
