OpenAI announced on October 28, 2025, that it will provide Indian users with one full year of free access to ChatGPT Go beginning November 4. This move aims to deepen engagement with India’s rapidly expanding AI community and strengthen OpenAI’s position in one of the world’s most important digital markets.
ChatGPT Go, launched in India in August 2025, is OpenAI’s most affordable subscription plan, priced at $5 per month. It offers enhanced AI features backed by the advanced GPT-5 model, including higher message limits, daily image generation, file uploads, and extended memory for personalized conversations. The plan was designed in response to local demand for budget-friendly access to premium AI tools.

India has rapidly become ChatGPT’s second-largest market, with millions of daily users encompassing students, developers, and professionals using AI for creativity, research, and productivity. Despite 29 million app downloads between May and August 2025, revenue growth has lagged, prompting OpenAI to launch this free-access initiative to boost adoption and engagement.
The one-year free subscription offer will be available to both new and existing ChatGPT users who activate ChatGPT Go between November 4 and a yet-to-be-specified closing date. The announcement coincides with OpenAI’s inaugural DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, which will gather developers, researchers, and business leaders to explore AI innovation and collaboration in South Asia.
OpenAI’s “India-first” strategy aligns with national efforts like the IndiaAI Mission to build AI capacity and extend access beyond metropolitan centers. Partnerships with civil society, educational platforms, and government programs emphasize inclusive growth of AI literacy and technology adoption.
“India is a critical test ground for OpenAI’s global expansion,” said Bangalore-based analyst Rajiv Mehta. “Offering ChatGPT Go free promotes long-term loyalty and product optimization in a massive and diverse user base.”
This initiative positions OpenAI alongside tech giants such as Google, Meta, and Anthropic, which are increasingly investing in India’s fast-growing AI ecosystem. If successful, the program could redefine generative AI usage patterns in the region and influence OpenAI’s market strategies in other emerging economies.
