A federal judge has rejected former President Donald Trump’s attempt to deploy National Guard troops to Portland, ruling that the situation did not meet the threshold of a national emergency despite ongoing protests.
The decision comes after weeks of unrest marked by sporadic violence, property damage, and clashes near federal buildings. The court described the incidents as “isolated” and not sufficient grounds for military intervention.
Sources said even local federal officials in Portland were unaware of the planned deployment until it was reported by the media. The Trump administration’s stated goal was to protect federal property and restore order, but the court deemed the move an overreach of executive authority.
As a result, troops remain on standby while Portland continues to experience intermittent demonstrations and tensions between protesters and law enforcement.
