Following disruptive drone sightings near major transport hubs, including recent flight interruptions at Munich Airport, Germany is moving to significantly boost federal police powers to counter unauthorized aerial threats.

A new bill has been proposed that would authorize federal police to jam, shoot down, or intercept rogue drones operating near sensitive infrastructure like airports, railways, and maritime shipping lanes.
Crucially, the legislation includes provisions for the police to acquire and utilize their own fleet of specialized counter-drones. The strategy—dubbed by some as “drone-on-drone” defense—acknowledges the need for a rapid, airborne response mechanism.
The Ministry of the Interior emphasized that the measure is necessary to maintain public safety and prevent deliberate interference with critical transport systems. While the move signals a major shift in security strategy, the bill must still receive final approval from the German Parliament before the new aerial defense powers take effect.
