Madagascar has plunged into political turmoil following reports that President Andry Rajoelina has fled the country after losing the backing of key military forces. The crisis intensified in recent weeks as widespread demonstrations erupted across the nation, led by a youth movement known as Gen Z Madagascar. Protesters have accused Rajoelina’s administration of corruption, poor governance, and failure to address severe economic and social challenges, including persistent power outages and water shortages.
The situation took a dramatic turn when CAPSAT, an elite military unit previously loyal to the president, defected and joined the demonstrators. This move effectively dismantled Rajoelina’s hold on power and left him politically isolated. According to multiple reports, including from the Associated Press and French media, the embattled president was flown out of Madagascar aboard a French military aircraft following an arrangement between Rajoelina and French President Emmanuel Macron. His exact location remains unconfirmed, though it is believed he traveled to France via the island of Réunion.
Government officials in Antananarivo have yet to release an official statement regarding the president’s departure. Meanwhile, uncertainty looms over the nation’s leadership and the next steps toward restoring stability and constitutional order.
