Phoenix, Arizona — Tens of thousands have gathered at State Farm Stadium in Phoenix to honor Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist and influencer who was fatally shot on 10 September at Utah Valley University. The memorial service, which could draw over 100,000 attendees, has been marked by a level of security comparable to the Super Bowl.

US President Donald Trump, Vice-President JD Vance, and cabinet officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are scheduled to speak at the event. Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, will also address the crowd. Speaking to reporters en route to Arizona, President Trump described the day as “tough,” calling Kirk “a great man.”
The atmosphere outside State Farm Stadium is more reminiscent of a political rally than a traditional memorial. Supporters have queued for hours, many wearing red, white, and blue outfits and Make America Great Again hats. Some carry religious slogans and posters featuring Kirk, while loudspeakers replay his speeches from trucks moving slowly through traffic.

Kirk’s death has reignited debates over free speech in America. A vocal advocate for freedom of expression, he also sparked controversy during his life. In the aftermath of his assassination, there has been a crackdown by the Trump administration on what it calls the “radical left,” prompting accusations of government overreach and claims of civil liberties violations. Teachers and civil servants have reportedly been dismissed for statements related to Kirk, and prominent television hosts, including Jimmy Kimmel, faced backlash over their commentary.
The Shooting and Arrest of the Suspect
Charlie Kirk was shot while speaking at an open-air college event in front of approximately 3,000 attendees. The shot is believed to have come from the roof of the Losee Center at Utah Valley University. FBI agents arrived within 16 minutes of the incident and secured the scene.

Tyler Robinson, 22, was identified as the suspect and was apprehended after a 33-hour manhunt, persuaded to surrender by his father. A high-powered Mauser .30-06 bolt-action rifle, believed to have been used in the shooting, was recovered nearby. Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder, and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced Robinson’s capture, stating, “We got him.” The suspect had been tracked through multiple images and footage showing him moving across the campus before fleeing to a wooded area.
A Polarizing Legacy
The massive turnout for Kirk’s memorial underscores his impact and influence, attracting supporters not only from across the United States but internationally. The event reflects both the admiration he inspired among his followers and the divisive nature of his public life.
As the memorial continues, security remains tight, and the service is expected to draw a historic crowd. Kirk’s death has left the nation grappling with the intersection of political activism, public safety, and the limits of free speech.
