Former Russian President and current deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has issued a stark warning that any future European war involving Russia could quickly escalate into a nuclear conflict.

Medvedev stated unequivocally that European nations “simply cannot afford a war with Russia.” He emphasized that the inherent instability of such a conflict carries a significant risk of catastrophe.
Specifically, he warned of the potential for a “fatal accident” to occur, stressing that any conventional conflict between Russia and European powers “has an absolutely real risk of escalating into a war using weapons of mass destruction.”
Medvedev’s comments highlight the Kremlin’s view of its nuclear doctrine, which allows for the use of such weapons if the existence of the state is threatened by either nuclear or conventional aggression. His statement reinforces the high-stakes nature of the current geopolitical tension between Moscow and the West.
